Luke Han's Award-Winning Resort Design Inspired by Hui-Style Villages

The design of the resort draws inspiration from the spatial mechanism of traditional Hui-style villages. By creating a series of enclosed courtyards, small water systems, and winding corridors, the resort forms an exclusive spatial mechanism that reflects the natural growth and harmony between man and nature. This unique approach to design sets the Wyndham Dongrong Resort apart from other resorts.

The resort's location, adjacent to the Hongcun and Xidi tourist attractions, provides a cornerstone for its operations. After an in-depth analysis of the location and regional culture, Luke Han proposed an integrated architectural, landscape, and interior design solution that combines localization and experience. This solution is a key feature of the resort's design, making it a unique destination for travelers.

The resort's realization technology is another aspect that sets it apart. "Yixian Green," a unique type of marble found in Yixian, is used on the outer wall of the hotel building below three floors. This gives the building a visual sinking treatment, allowing it to blend more closely with the surrounding natural environment. The horse head walls are layered on top of each other to form an array, reproducing the keynote of the micro-style with modern techniques.

The resort also features a "Huang Hui Pavilion" on the riverside and art installations that incorporate "horse head wall" elements from Hui architecture. These installations create an elegant and undulating building facade, allowing visitors to experience the texture changes like the roof of a village as they travel through the resort.

The design of the Wyndham Dongrong Resort faced several challenges, including blending the new with the old and the present with the history. To overcome these challenges, the design team used bamboo to mold and proof, and then prefabricated a bamboo joint board with cement fiber and reinforced concrete. This approach added an interesting layer of hierarchy to the building and also provided thermal insulation.
